The wedding design for this real-life wedding is all about the island paradise of Hawaii. It features bold, summery colors and a cheerful, unique style. The wedding invitations and program are designed in the shape of Monstera leaves, and instead of table numbers, there are cards shaped like the various Hawaiian islands. “You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.” This quote by Jon Kabat-Zinn applies not only to life—but especially to this wedding. The planning phase has its share of ups and downs, yet everyone remains calm. And in the end, it’s time to celebrate—with a view of the lake, a glass of champagne in hand, and the sun on your face.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cherry on Top

A Conversation with Wedding Planner Ellen Schwick

How do you start planning wedding decorations?
In addition to the couple’s wishes, I always take the specific wedding venue into account right from the start. When I walk through the venue with the day’s schedule in mind, new ideas keep coming to me—depending on the venue’s layout, which areas work well for decorations, where guests will gather, what activities are planned, and which highlights I want to emphasize.

What trends do you see right now?
A shift away from conventional norms toward greater individuality. The couple should be free to do whatever they like—whether it’s planning the day’s schedule and the wedding ceremony or designing the decorations.

What do you think of today’s modern styles?
I don’t think a wedding has to adhere to any one specific style. Often, it’s the contrast in styles that makes it appealing: regal chandeliers for a casual garden party, brightly colored, playful decorations in a minimalist, linear industrial loft, a winter wedding by a lake—far from fir trees and pinecones… The couple shouldn’t let themselves be limited by a specific style—often, deliberate combinations create a very personal atmosphere, such as vintage elements at a rustic alpine hut, greenery-style decor in an urban setting, or boho decorations in an elegant little castle. The unexpected delights guests and captures their attention. The courage to be authentic is almost always rewarded with genuine joy and a positive mood among the guests.

How do you, as a couple, figure out which wedding style suits you best?
Stay authentic and don’t let yourself be swayed by ideas from Instagram or Pinterest! It’s important to listen to your gut and think about what you personally like. It’s great if there’s a core element that you both connect with. Whether that’s a custom design, a specific color palette, selected flowers, a font, or materials that appear throughout the wedding, creating a beautiful backdrop for the celebration. But the central element could also be a specific location, a travel destination, a season, a landscape, a city, a particular era (e.g., the 1930s à la The Great Gatsby), a hobby, or a specific lifestyle (vegan, gothic).

What tip do you have for bringing the decorations to life?
Focus on individual highlights and make them really stand out. You don’t have to decorate every single thing—selective, well-thought-out highlights often make a bigger impact. And be selective about accepting help. It’s really nice when your sister or a friend helps with brainstorming ideas and the preparations. The question is whether it makes sense to assign these little helpers tasks on the wedding day itself, or if you’d rather hire outside help to ensure everyone involved has a relaxed and carefree day.
