10 Ideas for a Marriage Proposal
Whether it’s conventional, spontaneous, or unconventional and very well thought out—your marriage proposal is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show your significant other how much you love them. We’ve put together 10 creative ideas for the perfect marriage proposal . Use them as inspiration, tailor them to you and your relationship, and ask what might be the most important question of your life.
1. Marriage Proposal on Tour
Is your year packed with work, and does your schedule somehow make it impossible to escape the daily grind? Then make the most of your everyday life. Because—cliché alert—as we all know, the good things are right under your nose! Take a look around your city and think about which city hotspots you might enjoy. Most of the time, only tourists visit the beautiful spots in your city; as a local, you often don’t even notice them anymore. Maybe you’d like to book a personal tour guide? Then you can explore the most beautiful corners of your hometown together—it’ll give you a whole new sense of connection. An exclusive tour with a city guide offers the chance for a special surprise: Have the guide talk about a building where something historic once happened. She can then casually shift the focus to the present and say something like, “Truly historic events have taken place here, but the most important event will happen today.” That’s your cue! Propose to your special someone. This spot in your hometown will forever be your special place.
2. Marriage Proposal at the Airport
Is your girlfriend a frequent flyer because of her job? Or does she go on city trips with her friends twice a year? In that case, it makes sense for you to drive her to the airport and pick her up again. Perfect! That’s the best setting for a surprise marriage proposal. When the girls enter the airport concourse, first hold up a sign with your girlfriend’s last name—so far, everything’s pretty normal. Only the moment your globetrotter, luggage and all, makes eye contact with you do you flip the sign over. It reads “Mrs.” in capital letters, followed by your last name with a question mark! If you want, get down on one knee, pull the engagement ring out of your pocket, and ask her once again, in no uncertain terms, if she’ll marry you. Surrounded by all the travelers and right in the middle of her best friends. What a unique moment!
3. Submit an Application with Paparazzi
Proposing while on vacation isn’t exactly a new idea. However, you can plan the vacation and the proposal so that it’s guaranteed to be full of surprises and leave your partner in awe. Grab your best friend and his girlfriend, and brainstorm together where the trip should take you. A city trip to Dublin, a getaway to the Baltic Sea, or an active vacation in Menorca—what do you think your future wife would like best?
Once you’ve picked the destination, you can surprise your girlfriend with the trip—but without mentioning that your friend couple will be taking the same trip. On the day of departure, things get serious: Your friends will be traveling incognito and must keep a low profile. They’re the ones documenting your trip behind the scenes, filming and taking photos. Dad-paparazzi! After a chance to relax at the hotel, you’ll head to the spot you’ve chosen for the marriage proposal. Your friends are, of course, right on your heels again. And while your girlfriend is completely overwhelmed by the surroundings—whether on the mountain, volcano, or beach—and by your life-changing question, she might not even realize that among the tourists around her are two very familiar faces.
After your proposal, you can, of course, reveal the surprise, and you can joyfully fall into each other’s arms and toast to your happiness. And best of all: The entire marriage proposal—from the trip there, through the proposal itself, to the celebration—is documented, so you can relive the joy of your proposal trip again and again!
P.S.: Michelle & Nicolas from Austria Wedding got engaged this way in Edinburgh.

4. A proposal just like in the movie
The movie’s plot takes a back seat here, because this time, you two are the stars! For this marriage proposal, you’ll create a short trailer modeled after popular rom-com series. You can cast friends and family as the actors. Your smartphone and a reliable video editing app will handle most of the technical work. Instead, focus on the story. How do you want to frame the story leading up to the proposal? Do you visit your partner’s workplace, but she’s nowhere to be found? Do you all work together to create a mysterious piece of jewelry, but the secret behind the engagement ring isn’t revealed until you’re at the movie theater? Come up with a good story that fits you and your life together.
Once the movie is in the can, you send your girlfriend to the movies with her friends. Unfortunately, you can’t make it that day—or at least that’s what you tell her. Don’t get so caught up in the excitement of the big screen that you forget to buy the perfect engagement ring for your girlfriend. And then off to the movies: Before the actual movie starts, your trailer will be shown, and at the end, you’ll step in front of the screen and ask your very own superheroine to marry you. She’ll fall into your arms, and the audience’s applause will echo through the theater. Now that’s what a true happy ending looks like!
5. Marriage Proposal with a Memory Game
This popular children’s and party game makes a wonderful tool for your marriage proposal. Many online photo book providers offer Memory games that can be printed with your own photos. So you can have all the beautiful moments of your relationship—trips you’ve taken together, when you first met, and family celebrations—printed on the Memory cards. During an evening together on the couch, turn off the TV and pull out your Memory game. Over a glass of wine, play a round, and when no one’s looking, slip two more cards into the deck. Competitive players might say that’s cheating, but romantics know it’s true love: because in the end, your partner gets to reveal the final matching pair. The first card shows a ring. The second card reads: “Will you marry me?”
6. Couple Photo Shoot as a Wedding Proposal
Proposing during a couples’ photo shoot is definitely a trend that has continued to grow in recent years. As a result, many wedding photographers in Austria now specialize in these types of shoots! You plan a photo shoot because you’d like to have some nice photos of yourselves as a couple again. But then it happens—all of a sudden, right in the middle of the shoot: the engagement ring is pulled out, and tears of joy start to flow. That’s how a supposed couple’s photo shoot suddenly turns into an engagement photo shoot. The best part: You’ll have professional photos of the big moment, which you can share with your loved ones and then use right away for your save-the-date cards or wedding invitations.

7. A photo book to celebrate the engagement
You two have been through so much together as a couple. Have you been wanting to capture those beautiful moments from your relationship for a long time? Then now is the perfect time to accompany your marriage proposal with a photo book.
8. Marriage Proposal with an Advent Calendar
It’s November. It’s getting dark earlier in the evenings again, and everything feels a little calmer and more contemplative. You can use this magical time leading up to Christmas for a romantic proposal. But first, it’s time to get crafty: an Advent calendar with 24 doors doesn’t make itself. You can fill your Advent calendar with sweet love notes, candy, and little outings—like a trip to the theater or a Christmas market. Try to build up the anticipation as you go. Behind door number 23, you can drop a subtle hint about the marriage proposal the next day. And then on December 24, under the Christmas tree—with some punch and perhaps in front of the whole family—you’ll ask your future bride if she wants to spend the rest of her life with you.
9. Request for the Escape RoomAdventure
Ifyou’re fans of puzzles and escape rooms, this idea might be perfect for you! Book an escape room where you can work together as a team to solve tricky puzzles. Arrange with the staff so that the final puzzle reveals a hidden message—for example: “Will you marry me?” When you solve the final puzzle, the moment of revelation will be unforgettable, and you can have the engagement ring ready. It’s a mix of excitement and surprise that symbolizes your shared adventure!
10. The "Wrongly Delivered" Messenger of Love
Arrange for a surprise delivery service that pretends to be a package delivery person or food delivery driver and helps you stage the proposal in a creative way. While you’re relaxing at home, the supposed “delivery person” rings the doorbell and hands your partner a package—supposedly a misdelivery or a “surprise box.” When she opens it, she’ll find personal items or photos of special moments from your relationship that gradually tell a story. At the bottom of the box lies the engagement ring with a card that reads: “Will you take the next step with me?”

General Tips for Proposing Marriage
A place where you can feel at home.
Choose a place that makes both of you feel safe and comfortable. It can be a very familiar place—like your favorite mountain—or a completely new one that you’ve just discovered together on vacation. In the former case, it’s naturally about the memories and the wonderful experiences you’ve already shared in that place. With the latter, the idea is different: this beautiful place will be the starting point for the many memories you’ll still create together. Whether in the middle of a crowd or all to yourselves: wherever you want to propose, make sure that you feel just as comfortable as your partner. After all, you have an important question to ask…
Don't create an alter ego—be yourself!
Anyone proposing naturally wants to make a great impression. But if you squeeze into a tuxedo and feel like you’re in a costume, your partner will sense that, too. Of course, it’s nice if your outfit matches the Michelin-starred restaurant you’ve chosen, but a nice suit will do just as well. Not a suit kind of guy? That’s fine—just stay true to yourself in a T-shirt and jeans, and focus instead on finding sincere and heartfelt words. Because if they’re well-chosen, they’ll be remembered longer than any outfit.
Honest, straight-talking, and with a touch of kitsch.
Say what you’re feeling, in your own words. If it helps, use notes to guide you. That’s not a faux pas! It shows that you’ve put thought into it and how important this moment is to you. Do you like song lyrics or old-fashioned poems? Then go for it! Because a little bit of kitsch is part of what makes this moment so special.
The Proposal: Planned or Completely Spontaneous?
There are men and women who really come into their own when they can improvise: winning a stuffed teddy bear on a whim while strolling through a fair—and then the question just happens to fit the moment? Or giving a spontaneous speech in front of all the guests at a birthday party and thinking to yourself: Now or never? Why not!
But a planned proposal has just as much charm, because then all the details are just right: the atmosphere, the music, the guests, the outfits, and a declaration of love with words chosen with great care.
Maybe the perfect time for a proposal is right now? Whether you start planning first or just go ahead and ask—we’re rooting for you!
Proposing Marriage as a Woman
Are you thinking about taking matters into your own hands instead of waiting for your beloved to finally make the first move? These days, there’s absolutely no reason why a woman can’t propose.
Let's Party: Celebrate Your Engagement in Style!
Yes, a candlelit dinner for two is a super romantic idea for your marriage proposal. But it’s not the right setting for everyone to get engaged. Some couples are total party animals. Are you one of them? Do you love the dance floor, and is your girlfriend a little show-off? Then plan your engagement accordingly! Feel free to let everyone celebrate the big question and its answer. Invite your friends over under the pretext of a cozy cook-at-home night, stock the fridge with plenty of champagne, and turn your marriage proposal into a little show followed by a party. Or reserve a private room at a restaurant with a bar. That way, you can toast right away and party into the night!

The Right Time to Propose
We don’t presume to know when the ideal time is for your marriage proposal, where it should take place, or—most importantly—how you should best ask the big question. But as veterans of the wedding industry, we can draw on our wealth of experience to offer a few pointers that might help guide you—so that, in the end, you can find the right moment for you and your partner.
Length of the relationship before the marriage proposal
Let’s take a look at some numbers: According to various statistics, most couples in Austria and Germany have been together for about four to five years before they get engaged. But that’s just an average, and there’s no “right” length of time to be in a relationship before proposing. Every couple is unique and should find their own pace. The numbers back this up, too, because on average, older couples get married significantly sooner than younger ones, and the average age at marriage in Austria is 33.5 for men and 31.5 for women—this applies to both opposite-sex and same-sex couples.
Time of Day and Mood
The timing and atmosphere are important factors when it comes to proposing. For example, if you're planning a romantic and intimate proposal, the evening might be the best time. A proposal in the morning gives you the chance to kick off a wonderful day full of surprises. Or you could flip the script and start with a surprise day you’ve secretly organized—featuring special activities like a hot-air balloon ride or a skydive—making an already unforgettable experience even more memorable with your proposal.
Marriage Proposal – Choosing the Season
Every season has its own advantages when it comes to proposing. Depending on how you want to pop the question, it might be helpful to wait for the right season.
A Marriage Proposal in the Spring
It’s not called “spring fever” for nothing: Spring is the perfect time to propose during a romantic walk in the park or a hike. Even unique ideas, like proposing during a couple’s photo shoot, work well in the spring.
A Marriage Proposal in the Summer
Summer is probably the most popular time of year to propose. It may sound like a cliché to pop the question while on vacation, but good food, delicious cocktails, and a walk on the beach at sunset are hard to beat when it comes to romance. Plus, you can get really creative with a vacation proposal.
A Marriage Proposal in the Fall
If the two of you prefer city trips to beach vacations, then fall isn’t just the best time to travel—it might also be the perfect time to propose. You can choose the city’s most beautiful viewpoint or the colorful fall foliage in the city park as your backdrop. Or you could fly a kite together, to which you’ve attached a note with your proposal beforehand. If you’re extremely brave—or even more so, extremely wealthy—you could attach the ring to the kite instead of the note.
A Winter Marriage Proposal
Winter can be the perfect season for a marriage proposal—and not just for winter sports enthusiasts. It’s generally a time when couples enjoy cuddling and getting closer, which makes for the perfect opportunity to propose. Plus, for many, it’s also family time—so it’s the ideal moment to celebrate the engagement with loved ones right away.

Conclusion
As you can see, the perfect time to propose depends above all on you as a couple and your specific plans. Whether in the midst of spring fever or during a cozy winter, whether over an evening cocktail or as a surprise at breakfast—you really can’t go wrong. Because what matters much more than the timing of the proposal is who’s asking the question. And in that regard, you’re already perfectly prepared.
