You’ve gotten engaged, and now your minds are already racing with thoughts about the details of your wedding? Yes, we know that feeling—most couples feel the same way! Once you’ve finalized your budget, venue, and guest list, you can focus on the month or specific date for your wedding. But when is the best month to get married? We’ll give you a look at the ranking of the most popular wedding months and also show you why it’s sometimes worth venturing off the beaten path and choosing a wedding date in a less “popular” month of the year.

There’s no doubt about it: In our part of the world—from Germany through Switzerland to Austria—summer is the most popular time to get married. But summer can be quite long (if you’re lucky); so when is the most popular time to have a wedding?

1. Getting Married in June

It’s not too warm, and the chance of rain is gradually decreasing; you can already hold a reception or even a summer party outdoors, the first beautiful flowers can be picked from your trusted florist’s garden, and wedding photos taken amidst the blossoming nature look wonderfully fresh—all of these are reasons why many couples choose June for their wedding date. We say: and rightly so! June is a great month to say “I do.” But: it’s also very popular, and for you as a couple, that means you’ll need to get a head start on booking your preferred vendors. When making your inquiries, it’s best to follow our list of the first steps in wedding planning or work with a wedding planner from the very beginning. And: For a June wedding, allow plenty of lead time (if possible)—then nothing will stand in the way of your spring wedding.

2. Getting Married in August

Plenty of sunshine, balmy nights, that vacation vibe, and beautiful venues surrounded by nature and waterfront settings make August the second most popular month for weddings. A midsummer wedding is truly wonderful, but there’s a risk that many guests may have already booked a vacation for your exact wedding date. So: Send out your save-the-date cards right away!

3. Celebrating a Wedding in September

While not too long ago, spring was the wedding season par excellence, fall is now catching up in a big way. Many couples love to get married in September because the weather is often still nice and late summer provides wonderful light for photos. So your wedding photographers will thank you for choosing a September date! Plus, a September wedding date is ideal because it’s not quite as hot anymore. And if you’re planning a traditional wedding in folk costumes, you’ll look absolutely stunning in a dirndl or lederhosen this fall.

When do most couples get married?

The answer to the question of which season sees the most weddings is therefore clear: early summer! This isn’t entirely surprising when you consider that many couples get engaged around Christmas, New Year’s Eve, or even during their summer vacation. As a result, the wedding is scheduled half a year (New Year’s Eve), a year (summer vacation), or even a year and a half later. These are definitely timeframes that are realistic—if not ideal—for wedding planning.

Wedding Month—What Should You Keep in Mind?

You should consider the following factors when choosing your wedding month or wedding date:

• Birthdays, anniversaries, and wedding anniversaries: Before you settle on a specific date, take a look at your calendar. When is Grandma’s milestone birthday? And on which holiday is your nephew’s baptism again? Avoid important dates, and by going through your calendar, you might even find a suitable long weekend that works perfectly for you and your guests.
  

• Getting Married During School Breaks: Do many of your guests have children? If your wedding falls during a school break (e.g., summer or fall break), consider whether you should factor in childcare when planning. There are some wonderful childcare options for little kids and fun activities for older teens.
  

• Consider the time of day: Depending on whether you’re getting married during the winter months or in the middle of summer, the best time of day for a wedding ceremony will vary. While during the hot months of July and August, the ceremony can easily take place in the afternoon so that no one has to swelter in the hot midday sun, an early morning ceremony is ideal during the winter months. This leaves plenty of time for wedding photos and, for example, a cozy outdoor mulled wine reception before it gets dark again in the evening.

But if you book an indoor venue and keep the distance between the civil ceremony or outdoor wedding and the reception venue short, you’re sure to be completely happy with your April wedding.
