Winter Wedding in Malve & Zimtrosa

Tyrol

Most winter weddings follow one of two color schemes. Either you go with winter classics like bright red, dark green, and elegant gold—which, in unprofessional hands, can quickly take on a Christmas vibe—or you draw inspiration from the color palette of the Disney classic *Frozen* and design the wedding in blue, white, and silver to match the setting. Even though these themes have proven popular, we say, “Let it go!” 🎶

A Conversation with Owner Olivia Platt

Wedding cakes from Olivia Cake Designs are just like a bride: stunningly beautiful on the outside, full of character and love on the inside. In addition to custom cakes, Olivia Platt-Binder offers a wide variety of other sweet treats for your very special day.

‍How did you get into your profession?
‍Baking
has been a part of my life since I was a child. It all started with my grandmother’s Christmas baking, which introduced me to the art of baking. The idea of turning my passion into a career came to me when I visited Paris as a teenager. There, I fell completely in love with French patisserie and subsequently decided to attend the renowned culinary school “Le Cordon Bleu” in London after graduating from high school. There, I earned the “Pâtisserie & Professional Diploma” in Entrepreneurial Hospitality Management in 2013. Afterward, I earned the “Professional Cake Maker Diploma” at the “Peggy Porschen Cake Academy” in London. Following my training, I gained international experience and worked for two years as a head pastry chef before founding my company, “Olivia Cake Designs,” in my hometown of Wattens in 2017.

What sets you and your work apart?
‍I
think there are many excellent pastry chefs in Tyrol, and we all do our work well and enjoy it. What sets me apart from others are, above all, my cupcakes, which are now known even beyond the country’s borders. And, of course, my fondant cakes with my handmade sugar flowers. Many people often don’t even realize that the flowers are made of sugar because they look so deceptively real. :)

What do you like about the wedding industry?
‍Every
wedding is something truly special and tells its own unique love story. I love the wedding industry because it brings so much hope. Couples decide to officially commit to each other, and I think that’s such a beautiful thing! I’m truly delighted every time a couple chooses to let me be a part of their special day with my cakes and sweet treats.

What trends are currently emerging?
‍Naked
and semi-naked cakes are still popular. However, cream cakes are making a comeback as well. There are countless wonderful design possibilities here. Sweet tables, decorated with cupcakes, cake pops, and other treats, also remain a very popular highlight at weddings. Personally, though, I’m also getting more and more requests for my handmade sugar flowers, and I hope that number will grow even more in the coming years.

How did you get married?
‍My
husband and I have been married since November 2020. It was one of the best days of my life, even though we got married with just a very small group of people during the lockdown. We had originally planned a huge celebration, but in the end, it’s all about our love for each other, and I would marry my husband all over again!
