There are two options: Either the painting is completed entirely on-site—ideal for anyone who wants a quick, striking comic-style piece—or she begins with the basic composition and finishes the artwork in her studio after the celebration.

A Conversation with Artist Mouna Arnaout
What exactly is live painting, and how long does it take?
First, we discuss the size of the painting. The larger it is, the more impressive it will look at the celebration, of course. It’s important to keep in mind that the painting is ultimately for the couple and will need space to be hung. I always bring a blank canvas and start painting on-site. Basically, there are two options: Either the painting is created so that it’s finished during the celebration—in which case I paint flat areas and outlines (comic style)—or I start the painting on-site and continue adding the details in my studio.
How fast are you at live caricaturing?
I can do about 20 people per hour. We’ll discuss in advance how many drawings you’d like, and then we’ll agree on a suitable time frame. Of course, a simplified, quick style allows me to work faster than more detailed drawings with color.
How far do you travel?
From Vienna, I’ll go anywhere—no matter where the event is held.
What sets you apart as a live artist?
I started my career as a storyboard artist. That required (back when there was no internet) freehand drawing from memory and speed. In addition, art has always been a part of my life on the side. Both of these experiences help me during live performances: drawing or painting quickly and confidently to capture the essence of the moment (caricature), on the one hand, and spontaneously attuning to the specific situation and uniqueness of the celebration, on the other.
